Since my lady and I got iPhones, I have discovered podcasts. I am currently listening to several podcasts on many topics.

Escape Pod, Podcastle, and Pseudopod are short fiction.
Dan Carlin Hardcore History, What You Missed in History Class, and Things You Should Know are history and other interesting stuff.
Get it Done Guy is one I just found today and is very cool.

I also am listening to a couple of writing podcasts: Dragon Page Cover to Cover, The Secrets, I Should Be Writing, and Writing Excuses.

So these along with some audible books help keep me sane at work.

If any of you are interested in checking out any of these podcasts, let me know and I can post websites for them.

NaNoWri - Not

Okay, so I've got a few stories knocking around in my head and thought that trying to do the NaNoWriMo thing would help to get me moving.

Well, it didn't work out as well as I had planned.

I did get to a little over 3,000 words. But I realized that my main character was flat, boring and generally not going to be liked by much of anybody the way things were going. Hell, one of the throw-away characters was more interesting to me when reading what I had written to get back in the flow.

So, I'm dumping what I had and starting over with the pre-writing stuff again.
And I have been writing, and will continue to write. Not that I will let anybody read any of it anytime soon.

I have heard that one of the questions most asked of published writers is, "where do you get your ideas?" And they often answer something like, "everywhere."

I can understand that. I have several ideas for stories that I think are worth telling. The hard part seems to be getting them organized into a coherent form and getting the prose on the page.

So, that time of year has come around again. And, once again, it sort of snuck up on me. So, the one day out of the year that I can truely proclaim is all about me will be spent pretty much like any other day. Not that I am complaining really. I'm not really a lime-light kind of guy. I am much more comfortable out in the wings, hiding in the shadows. Besides, my wonderful lady courtierka has offered to cook dinner for me.
I guess what has me thinking is how passive I am on so many things, and wondering what events and experiences have made me that way. Or is this a nature vs. nurture kind of thing. Was I just constructed in such a way that sends me scurrying for the shadows when the spotlight turns on? And is there some way to change that? Do I want to change that.
But Sunday is my birthday and most of the day will probably be spent in front of the computer playing games. I find myself wishing that I had contacted friends last week and arranged some social time. Perhaps that can happen next weekend for my lady's birthday.

Wow! It never rains but it pours it seems.

I am in the first week of a two week assignment. And yesterday afternoon I got a call from the 2010 Census. Seems that I passed the test and they are offering me a two month position.
So I talked to all relevant parties and will be starting training with the Census Bureau on Monday.
And i will be making more than I was making at my last job.

Well, as if this week \has not been stressful enough.

I am now jobless.

I was completely blindsided by being fired today.
Not much else to say that is repeatable even here.

Well, my birthday has come and gone.
Courtierka was off in L.A. at the IKINS.
Sounds like she had a wonderful time.
I spent the weekend relaxing.
Saturday night a couple of friends took me out to dinner and then we played some pool for a couple of hours. Even though our skills were nonexistant we had a lot of fun.
It was nice to do something out of the routine.
I did not get any project work done, but the front motif on the needle book cover is over half done, and I have picked a pattern for the back cover. So I don't feel bad about not working on it this weekend.

At work we are getting closer and closer to the holiday season. And since I work for a charity processing incoming financial donations, it is a really big deal. We have a good team put together, so I think that this year will go much more smoothly than any of the years since I started here a little more than three years ago.

Well, back to work for me.

I guess this could explain a lot.

The days are slow and the months fly by.

I last posted in June admonishing myself to post more often.
And now it is September and my birthday is right around the corner.

But not all is as bad.
I finished the "monstrosity" and my elephant caftan.
My newest project is a needle book cover.
It will have a cross-stitched shaker design.

And I have admitted to the reality that I am getting older.
I bought a magnifying lens that I wear on my head.
It makes me look like a kooky old man, but I can see what I'm working on better and with less eye strain. So I suppose that is a good thing.

Life is busy, as it always is. And I am beginning to use my time better.
Not every day, but more often than has been the norm.

for my friends who have been pestering me for ideas...

I am currently playing World of Warcraft, EVE Online, and City of Heroes. So, game time for any of those games is good. Also, the Burning Crusade expansion for World of Warcraft would be good.

I collect small elephant figurines, pictures, puzzles and beads, buttons, charms. But not too cutesy.

Currently I am exploring eastern religions. Specifically Hinduism. And reading books by Osho. I currently have "awareness".

Other ideas include fiction books; I am tending towards sci fi/fantasy and mysteries usually of the humorous or thriller varieties.

Comic books/graphic novels are good too. I am reading Girl Genius online and my favorite super hero is Doctor Strange.

T-shirts with comic book figures or elephants would be enjoyed much since many of my current shirts are getting old.

And finally is wood working tools. Specifically scrapers and small wood turning tools. I also want to start making my own arrows so a fletching jig or shaft straightener is needed.

I also have a snow leopard from Build-a-Bear. Her name is Alicia and she needs new clothes.

Well, it was annual checkup time again.
Seems that other than gaining back all the weight I lost before going to Paris, I am pretty healthy. All the parts look/feel/sound in good working order. We just have to wait for the bloodwork to come back.

Now i guess I just need to take a little better care of myself.

Aging Parents

For those of you who know me in the real world.

My mom is back in the hospital again. They are giving her a feeding tube today.
My sister and I think that she may not come back out of the hospital again. Her body seems to be doing a slow system shutdown. Ka and I are going up to the hospital tonight to see her. I was originally going to wait and make my weekly visit Friday evening, but don't want to just sit at home and stew about it.
